Steer clear of creepy contact lenses this Halloween, experts warn

Halloween is a matter of days away and, if you’re celebrating, chances are you’ve got an outfit planned. However, while we’re all for a bit of face paint and over-the-top costumes, there’s one Halloween accessory that you really should be steering clear of – coloured contact lenses. While such lenses can take your look to new levels of creepy by making your eyes totally black, red or zombie-like, they could end up permanently damaging your sight – a truly scary thought.

The side effects Doctors have warned that contact lenses should only be worn if sold by a registered optician or doctor who it qualified to give after-care advice – meaning any such product you find online or in dress-up shops are a no-go.

It has been cautioned that revellers could suffer a loss of vision or infection as a direct result of wearing the lenses – a risk that is heightened if the products are shared with friends or recycled from previous years. Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Badrul Hussain, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, said: ‘There can be an increase in these problems in the period around Halloween.

Some of the cases we see, like patients sharing lenses with friends, wearing the same pair year after year or well past the expiry date, and storing them in tap water, have devastating effects. Most of the patients haven’t been shown how to look after their cosmetic lenses or their eyes properly.’ MORE: 16 HALLOWEEN CUPCAKE RECIPES[1]

He added: ‘Not knowing the basics of using contact lenses safely can put you at higher risk of developing painful eye injuries, infections, and in the worst cases, risk of permanent sight loss. The cornea, the clear window at the front of the eye, is delicate and can be scratched easily by inexperienced contact lens wearers.

This can expose the eye to organisms that can cause nasty infections, which in extreme cases can result in permanently impaired, or loss of, vision.’ Vicky McDermott, chief executive of the General Optical Council, also commented on this particular Halloween trend. She said:

‘When worn safely, the risks associated with cosmetic contact lenses are low. However, when lenses are sold illegally, wearers are denied important safety checks and advice, putting them at risk of serious damage to their eyes.’ All in all, if you’re desperate to spook-up your eyes as part of your Halloween look, always speak to a qualified professional first.
