Greenfield library holding book collection sale

GREENFIELD — Just in time for Mother’s Day and graduation season, the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library is holding a unique two-day spring book sale featuring an assortment of books donated by the family of the late Susan Platt, a longtime library volunteer and member of the Friends board.

“It’s quite a valuable collection,” said Mary McDonough, Friends of the Greenfield Public Library board member.

The book sale will take place May 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. and May 6 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the basement of the library.

The Platt collection is comprised of approximately 800 books. Many are first editions — some of them first printing — with many signed by the authors, including John Le Carré, Joseph Eger, Richard Flanagan, Anita Hill, Jerzy Kosinski, Annie Leibovitz, Elmore Leonard, Archer Mayor, Frederik Pohl, Colson Whitehead and more. Among the offerings are collector leather-bound books from the Franklin Limited I editions, leather-bound books accented with 22-karat gold from Easton Press, and others from State Street Press.

The collection will be on display in the Greenfield Room and will be specially priced. Booksellers are welcome.

The book sale will also feature more than 11,000 other books to choose from in its regular stacks. Nonfiction is sorted by subject and fiction is in alphabetical order, making it easy to find what you’re looking for. Volunteers will also be available to help. The sale includes a large selection of children’s books as well as many CDs and DVDs.

For the true bargain hunter, the sale will offer a bargain book section where customers can fill a bag for $2.

All proceeds from the book sale will support library enrichment programs including the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest, the Homebound Delivery Program, adult book groups, museum passes and all of the children’s programs.
