At Roxbury Townwide Garage Sale, Clearing Clutter Bumps Against Keeping Memories

ROXURY, NJ – As he prepared the driveway June 24 for the first day of this year’s Roxbury Townwide Garage Sale, Vinnie DellaValle made one request of his wife: That nothing – sold or not sold this weekend – gets back into their home when the weekend is over.

“Just promise me, what you don’t sell this weekend, gets donated and doesn’t come back in the house,” pleaded DellaValle as his wife, Jackie, set up their sale on Honeyman Drive in Succasunna. Out on the asphalt, she’d already placed tables of barely worn baby shoes, video games, racks and racks of clothing and many gently-used toys.

“I’d love to clear out all these things to get more room in my garage and house, but it’s so hard to let go of clothes that my kids wore – it’s like selling a memory” Jackie  DellaValle said. She flashed a bit of melancholy as she held up a turtle costume her 4-year-old wore just a Halloween ago.

The same story is unfolding all over Roxbury this weekend as driveways and garages overflowed with family wares that just didn’t need to stay in boxes taking up space anymore. The sale continues today.

As the weather broke Saturday from a rainy morning to a gorgeous sunny day, hordes of shoppers fanned out all over town looking for all sorts of bric-a-brac, like furniture for a new apartment or a baby stroller at a bargain price.

“I collect milk glass,” said a woman who heard about the town-wide garage sale through a friend. “I’m from Long Valley and when I looked up the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce Map and Directory and saw how many people were participating in this sale, I knew I had a good chance of finding something today.” She was armed with a printout of all the participants, and she’d circled all the addresses she hoped to hit this weekend.

Over on Hillside Avenue, it was a team effort as Dorie Whittenburg’s family took advantage of her friend Cheryl Sanchez’s mom’s prime location on a very visible corner. “We had people milling around at 7:30 this morning as we were setting up,” Whittenberg said. “I can’t believe how many people have come by already.”

Whittenburg lives in a townhouse, but offered to pool her sundries with two other families so they could all help man the tables during the weekend sale, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When asked what most bargain hunters were seeking, everyone said electronics, fashionable costume jewelry, videos, vintage albums and baby toys topped the list.

For a detailed map of locations and offerings visit the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce website.  This is the chamber’s 5th Annual Townwide Garage Sale fundraiser.

Those seeking more bargains can mark their calendars for Sept. 23. That’s when the Community Yard Sale at Horseshoe Lake will take place.
