REDLANDS >> Some call it a bargain hunter’s paradise.

For three days a week, Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe at Plymouth Village connects the community to items from yesterday and today.

“For a little shop we have some beautiful things,” store employee Joanna Carskaddan said. “And these are some of the best prices in town.”

The shop is Plymouth Village’s thrift store, tucked inside the retirement community. Shoppers can find items such as men’s and women’s clothing, suitcases, purses, glassware, bedding and much more.

All items are donated to the shop either from the public or by Plymouth Village residents. Each item that comes in is “reasonably priced,” said store manager Joyce Wiest, with sale proceeds benefiting the Plymouth Village Residents Association and its efforts to support residents in need.

About eight volunteers — all Village residents — help run the shop and take on various tasks throughout the week. Some assist customers, while others price the items for sale. Some stop by after business hours to sort items or to clean.

“It’s a lot of work,” Wiest said.

The shop gets its name from the novel “The Old Curiosity Shop” by Charles Dickens.

Having a shop on Plymouth Village’s campus is a huge plus, those involved say. Not only does it bring supporters of the “shop local” movement to Plymouth Village, it serves residents who are unable to drive or who are dealing with other health issues and can’t travel long distances, Wiest said.

It also provides shop employees with an extra activity to take on post-retirement.

Carskaddan, for example, who moved into Plymouth Village with her husband only months ago, was looking for something to do in her spare time.

While providing a tour of the shop to a customer, Carskaddan pulled out a vintage Samsonite Starfire suitcase on sale for $10, a coffee maker from the 1970s for $5 and clothing starting at $2.

“Things move in and out of here so quickly. It’s wonderful,” she said. “I saw a woman in here two weeks ago who bought $85 worth of glassware and dishes.”

That’s how store employees say the store got its reputation.

“You can find things here you can’t find at the Goodwill,” Wiest said. “There’s a little bit of everything here.”
