Gemtune SMSL SA-50 Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier + Power Adapter (Black)With British Standard Plug (Electronics)

Just over 2 years later and the device does not function. The blue light comes on but no output comes out of the unit, shame, it was a brilliant device. (Set to 4 stars rather than 5)

What I wanted was a simple, no frills amplifier with a bit of grunt to power two passive studio monitors. What I got was a sleek, mobile powerhouse that far exceeded expectations and I couldn’t recommend it more. I had done a bit of research and looked into the TDA7492 chip specifications and was satisfied with the numbers I saw, but it really is fascinating to see it in action. I don’t think 50W per channel is at all over-enthusiastic, I was powering a 6.5″ Tang Band subwoofer (4Ohm), which is 100 watts and it definitely put it through it’s paces with alarming accuracy and control, this will still shake the floor if you want it to. The volume knob emits a faint blue glow and the power button leaves a satisfying click, from the look of the device I expected a little more resistance in how the volume turned, but I prefer it as it is – it still feels like an incredibly high quality experience using the device. The 24V power supply provided pushes a clean 4.5A at 24V which is in keeping with the adapters initially optimistic 100W power output, the simple inputs and outputs is perfect, all you need from this small, succinct package is your input, output, and volume control. These also perform stunningly for a near field listening experience.

This device blows similarly specced hi-fi amps you might find in richer sounds for twice the price out the water. I’d almost go to say I recommend this over the topaz AM1.

Gemtune SMSL SA-50 Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier + Power Adapter (Black)With British Standard Plug (Electronics)

    Observations:

    * Power on is instant, where as power off takes about 3 seconds before the speakers go quiet.
    * Some reviews mention a bad power cord. Mine was fine, and full sized.

    Pros

    * Louder than I’ll ever need for nearfield listening with bookshelf speakers.
    * Analog volume dial. I prefer this to digital controls, but this dial isn’t without drawbacks (see below).
    * Size. This is perfect for a desktop.
    * Doesn’t get hot. Or even warm.

Read the cons below knowing that this is my chosen device and I’m very happy with it. I use it daily…

    Cons

    * The Dial
    – Plastic. Metal dials are always better.
    – It’s got an exponential increase in volume. You turn it about 3% and it goes from “off” to “uncomfortably loud” (again, in my nearfield setup). Make sure you keep the source volume (PC in my case) turned down a bit so you get more dial space to work with.
    – There’s a channel imbalance at the very low end of the dial. Right side only matches volume when you turn it up a bit more. If you do the above and turn down source volume this becomes moot. Still annoying however.

    * Ground noise is very present. After getting annoyed by it, I tested *just* the amp (no incoming source) with a conditioned power supply, on a separate desk with good speaker wire. I’m using Dali Zensor 1 speakers, so reasonable quality. There is a hissing I can hear about 1 meter away. Sometimes I can hear it through quiet music. A full sized amp would generally have a much lower hiss, but I don’t want a beast filling up desk space. The size of this device is worth it, and I couldn’t find another similarly priced option. On balance I’m happy to live with it. FYI this hiss does not increase when you turn up the volume. It stays constant, and is likely resulting from the soldering and built-to-price nature of the device.

    * There was a very slight height imbalance with he back left foot. Bugged me so a couple of slices of electrical tape fixed that.

Overall I do recommend this for desktop use. If it’s anywhere with more space, consider other options.

I’m using this excellent amp to drive one of my favourite HiFi speakers (a Ruark Templar) using one of the amp’s channel to drive the tweeter and the other the bass – the sound is brilliant. The amp is driven by a Neat Airstream wireless airplay receiver with a 3.5mm jack to pair of RCA cables connecting the two so that I can either have the amp & speaker outputting the stereo sound or just one (left or right) channel. I’m buying the same receiver & amp again to set up the other channel. Once done I’ll have the flexibility to have multi-room wireless streaming music (using iTunes or Whaale) or wireless HiFi stereo sound using the pair is the same room (left channel through one, right channel through the other).

A great sound from a well engineered amp that looks good!
